Okay, exactly 26.5 hours to go. We are pretty much packed aside from the little piddly things that can't be done until right before we leave - and I'm happy to say we are easily packed into 4 small carry-on roller bags. With a little room to spare! Two of the bags have handy zippers that expand to add an extra 33% to each suitcase which we plan to use for the way home (and we'll check them). The benefit for us in having only carry-on on the way there is that we are guaranteed not to lose our luggage as well as being able to hop off the plane and get right to where we're trying to go. Standing for an half an hour (at least!) at a baggage carousel is one of my least favourite things to do in the entire world.
Having 4 small bags also makes it a lot easier for us when we're getting on and off trains as we're taking two long haul train trips - and it's also much easier to store (and keep an all important eye on them!).
As for speaking spanish... well, my one university course is being slightly dusted off (I've looked through an old textbook a few times....) and basically we're just counting on the kids being able to translate for us! I asked Chloƫ if she needed to go over her spanish and she just rolled her eyes and said, "How could I forget it? Of course I know it!". So... I'm counting on it! But, in the instance that she doesn't know what's going on I have my all-important Rick Steve's Spanish Phrase Book. The French one was very useful - and funny! - and this spanish one comes with a very important tapas translation chapter to ensure that we don't end up with fried lamb brains when we meant to order meatballs.
In a few hours we'll log into British Airways and save the seats we want and make sure the kids have their kid's meals ordered. Julia has already pre-planned to watch the Toy Story trilogy while Chloƫ is looking forward to Diary of a Wimpy Kid. We are set! Hasta luego amigos!
