This was written yesterday (Saturday) but we haven't had internet until now. I will write about today in a little bit. No pictures, sorry!!
What a strange day! We had a crazy rushed morning getting out of our Barcelona apartment. We had an 11 o’clock check-out which seems very reasonable – if you don’t have jet lag and don’t go to sleep until almost 2 a.m.! We have never had a single Spanish person turn up on time, yet for some reason the apartment cleaners showed up at 10:59 catching us totally off guard – and had us begging for ‘cinco minutos por favor’! We left behind some things that we’d meant to take – nothing that can’t be replaced (shampoo, coffee, etc) but it was still a little frazzling!
We took the metro to the main train station where we rented a car for the week coming up. The people at Europcar were fantastic and we made it out without a hitch – very pleasing indeed. The trip up to Begur was supposed to be an hour and a half but today is Saturday (in August!) which means half the population is on the road heading somewhere else… we were going towards the French border so half the cars had French plates, half had Spanish, and every now and then you saw a Dutch or German one. Our trip was more like 3 hours (with a relaxing coffee break near the end) and we experienced some extreme frustration in getting ahold of the lady who would eventually let us into our place… but to spare the irritating details all worked out in the end and our place is FABULOUS! Aside from not having an internet connection, that is. We have our own little house with a gorgeous backyard private pool, two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a nice living room, kitchen, and dining room. Totally perfect – except that it didn’t include a single roll of toilet paper! Weird. Luckily I had a few napkins in my purse so the kids did an emergency pee before we headed out to the grocery store to stock up. Crazy thing is, I thought I had bought tp and when we got back I realized it was paper towels!!! Ugh. We will make due until tomorrow but it’s really annoying! The kids took a quick swim and then we went out for dinner. It started pouring (see a theme yet?) and we scrambled through the streets looking for an acceptable place – and we stumbled across perfection! It was so delicious, we all gobbled everything and left very, very satisfied. The food has been really great, and I look forward to posting some pictures when I get the chance. I thought this place had wi-fi and I had great intentions of posting our Barcelona pictures but apparently I was confused… I’d check the website but obviously I can’t! There is an internet cafĂ© in town that we will put to good use – but I’m not sure about the picture situation – so here’s a visual…. (Cue mist….. – we are in a lovely little house on the mountainside overlooking the Mediterranean… a glass of rose wine, some olives, and a cute private pool in the backyard….” What, are we hanging with P. Diddy?? Not quite, no chandeliers or waiters – we have to make our own beds and cook our own food but it really is delightful. Okay, there’s the occasional kid squabble with typical parent frustration but that happens at home too and it’s easier to handle here. Or, we don’t care as much? Either way, it’s nice. Life on pause….
PS - Forgot to mention the truck stop we ate lunch at - wow! The food was plentiful but a little yucky, the flies were insane, and the bathrooms left a little to be desired. However, the kids got free beach balls and there were crazy Mentos flavours so it all worked out well! How many people have eaten in a Spanish rest area? We can now check that off the list...
